Guest246 (guest): Now, you guys are making me hungry.
Nov 10 2009, 2:37 AM
cobrajetjohn: I am still full from dinner, so am ok. Not a evening snacker.
Nov 10 2009, 2:38 AM
SewOnline: My youngest daughter has gone vegetarian this year and since she is going to culinary school in the spring she said she wants to take over the cooking!! Yikes I am scared.....no turkey?
Nov 10 2009, 2:38 AM
Guest714 (guest): maybe you can cook a turkey too
Nov 10 2009, 2:38 AM
EileenH: To me, Christmas meal is turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy, cranberries. But myh husband doens't like turkey, so we have to have ham too, well we always did for my dad too.
Nov 10 2009, 2:38 AM
SewOnline: ok, just jump in Eileen, what is your favorite holiday dish or tradition?
Nov 10 2009, 2:39 AM
SewOnline: I do turkey on Thanks giving and then Ham for Christmas
Nov 10 2009, 2:39 AM
EileenH: The last few years I've kinda given up on the big traditional meal, and we've had more of the snacky type stuff, and just pig out on that all day.
Nov 10 2009, 2:39 AM
SewOnline: I told my daughter she can't get too radical with the menu, but I will be curious to see what she adds to the meal this year. I know she will be baking a couple of pies...which that's not so bad, right?
Nov 10 2009, 2:40 AM
Guest246 (guest): For Thanksgiving I like Turkey, dressing, cranberry, sweet potatoes, and sweet potatoe, but I am sort of like your daughter. I don't eat red meat at all.
Nov 10 2009, 2:41 AM
Guest246 (guest): Sorry, I meant pumpkin pie too.
Nov 10 2009, 2:41 AM
SewOnline: She doesn't eat any meat....turkey, chicken, fish, red meat nothing! (I likes my meat to much to give it up totally) But she has gotten me to eat a lot less meat now)
Nov 10 2009, 2:41 AM
EileenH: I have a sugar cookie recipe from my aunt that is just fabulous and we have to have that every year.
Nov 10 2009, 2:42 AM
Guest714 (guest): we always have turkey for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, it just wouldn't be the same without it
Nov 10 2009, 2:42 AM
SewOnline: Yes nothing like a good sugar cookie recipe
Nov 10 2009, 2:42 AM
Guest714 (guest): Sugar cookies and shortbread are a must in our house
Nov 10 2009, 2:42 AM
SewOnline: What about decorations? do you all decorate the outside and insides of your houses?
Nov 10 2009, 2:43 AM
Guest714 (guest): we have put up Christmas lights on the outside of our house for the first time this year
Nov 10 2009, 2:43 AM
EileenH: And I have to make coffee cakes, too. I like having that type of breads in the freezer any time of the year, but I really have to have it at Christmas.
Nov 10 2009, 2:43 AM
cobrajetjohn: Me just the tree and my big poinsetta, house too small
Nov 10 2009, 2:43 AM
SewOnline: does anyone live on that block that is all lit up? We have one block in the neighborhood that has every house decorated! If they sell their house they have to sell to someone who will participate. (Or so they say)
Nov 10 2009, 2:44 AM
Guest246 (guest): We decorate the inside of the house. We use to have lighted reindeers, sleigh, lampost, etc., but my husband got tired of replacing the burned out lights, so now we only have a wreath on the door outside.
Nov 10 2009, 2:45 AM
cobrajetjohn: Most of my messages are not going through. into cyberspace.
Nov 10 2009, 2:45 AM
Guest246 (guest): Yes, we have a neighborhood near us that every house has tons of lights and decorations.
Nov 10 2009, 2:45 AM
SewOnline: I used to go all out years ago but have scaled back these last few years. I would actually store lots of my year round decorations to make room for the holiday ones. But not anymore. Too much work and the kids don't like to help anymore.
Nov 10 2009, 2:46 AM
EileenH: We have a few outdoor lighting things, I hope we get them up this year. I got one of those projector things at a garage sale a couple of years ago. We had it up last year, shining onto the barn. Then a day or so before Christmas one of the kids went out to plow snow, and when he got done, he did something with the cord so that it didn't work. I hope to get that up and working this hear.
Nov 10 2009, 2:46 AM
SewOnline: Yes the lights are my biggest frustration every year. There is always trouble with the lights.
Nov 10 2009, 2:47 AM
Guest246 (guest): Yes, lights are the biggest problem, but they are so pretty.
Nov 10 2009, 2:48 AM
SewOnline: Funny, Eileen, I just sold one of those projectors at my garage sale this past year! We used it once. Seemed silly since our house can only be seen by the neighbors on our court. My husband said why bother!
Nov 10 2009, 2:48 AM
Guest246 (guest): Also, storage is a big problem. We had so many decorations that they were taking up most of our basement.
Nov 10 2009, 2:48 AM
SewOnline: I agree, I love to drive around and look at the lights.
Nov 10 2009, 2:49 AM
SewOnline: When the kids were little we would go for a drive on Christmas eve each year to find the best houses. there was one street we found that there was a line so long that it took 2 hours to go through 2 blocks!
Nov 10 2009, 2:49 AM
Guest246 (guest): Yes, I like to drive around and see them too. I don't mind when someone else does the work.
SewOnline: I am with you Eileen, I like to look but don't want the work
Nov 10 2009, 2:50 AM
SewOnline: Not much anymore Pat. Seems to be a dying tradition. We used to get tons, and send tons, but now only a few go out.
Nov 10 2009, 2:50 AM
Guest246 (guest): I just send out a few cards, but it is getting less and less each year. I usually email or telephone now
Nov 10 2009, 2:51 AM
cobrajetjohn: We get around 30, used to be double.
Nov 10 2009, 2:51 AM
Guest714 (guest): I intend to mail cards but the last couple of years haven't sent many and as a consequence we don't receive many anymore
Nov 10 2009, 2:51 AM
EileenH: Somebody sent me a picture of a fully decorated and lit up house. The house next door to it had spelled out in light 'DITTO' with an arrow pointing next door. I thought it was kinda cute...
Nov 10 2009, 2:51 AM
Guest714 (guest): I got that Ditto email too, I liked it
SewOnline: You know that you have a free lesson that shows you how to make them right?
Nov 10 2009, 2:54 AM
cobrajetjohn: No, can't make cards, but had lady at meeting last week selling home made cards for $4. each, cheaper than card shop. And she donated $1. from each card to the veteran quilts we make.
Nov 10 2009, 2:54 AM
SewOnline: When you registered you should have gotten my free lesson on making fabric postcards.
Nov 10 2009, 2:54 AM
Guest714 (guest): I have only made a few for 'special' recipients as I know the others wouldn't appreciate the time and effort
Nov 10 2009, 2:54 AM
EileenH: I think i remember seeing that. Now all I need is the time.
Nov 10 2009, 2:55 AM
cobrajetjohn: Too late for this year, need too quilt a queen quilt by hand, and a single before Xmas.
Nov 10 2009, 2:55 AM
Guest714 (guest): I don't remember seeing the free lesson, is it still available?
Nov 10 2009, 2:55 AM
SewOnline: If you use a large piece of fabric you can cut it up into smaller pieces, (the tutorial explains this) so that you can do an entire series pretty quickly. All you need is an afternoon really.
Nov 10 2009, 2:56 AM
SewOnline: Pat use the machine, and you would have plenty of time. LOL
cobrajetjohn: I do good to piece o the machine. Yes I have 7.
Nov 10 2009, 2:57 AM
SewOnline: It's that thing with the plug and foot pedal
Nov 10 2009, 2:57 AM
Guest246 (guest): You have 7 sewing machines
Nov 10 2009, 2:57 AM
SewOnline: Yeah and she only hands quilts.....go figure LOL
Nov 10 2009, 2:57 AM
cobrajetjohn: I have a treadle one, and 2 knee ones, and a wind up one
Nov 10 2009, 2:58 AM
cobrajetjohn: I have 5 antiques and my Mom's featherweight and my Kenmore which I use to piece.
Nov 10 2009, 2:58 AM
Guest246 (guest): Wow, I have only 2 the new Brother NS80 (Runnaway Project) and an older Singer that is more mechanical.
Nov 10 2009, 2:59 AM
SewOnline: Pat is an old fashioned girl and we like her just the same. I just like teasing her as we are on opposite sides about the quilting. I like the speed of my machine where as she like the traditional method of hand quilting.
Nov 10 2009, 2:59 AM
EileenH: I'm going to have to say goodnight. We get up pretty early in the mornings, my husband has to be to work by 6am, and once I'm awake, I'm up for the day. Hope everyone has a good holiday season, whatever it is that you may be celebrating!
Nov 10 2009, 2:59 AM
cobrajetjohn: Your one cost more than all 7 of mine. I inherited 2 and had 2 give me. I spent $40. on 2 more. So really only paid 350. for my Kenmore.
